So depending on the time of day, you could already be adding on some drive time here. ![]() The beginning of the drive first requires getting out of the city of San Jose. There is one road to Limon, and from Limon, one road along the coast to Puerto Viejo. This was mostly due to the traffic we experienced and how aggressive the driver was with passing slow traffic! Our return trip was much quicker and only took around 5 hours. Even though Google Maps told us it would take around 4.5 hours, it ended up taking us more like 6 hours. What Is the Drive Like From San Jose to Puerto Viejo? They were affordable, reliable, and the shuttles were comfortable. Overall, I would definitely book with Transportation in Costa Rica again. And we stopped again for lunch at a more local place. The drive was also much quicker due to less traffic. This time, he was extremely friendly and interactive with our daughter. Speaking of the return trip, once again, our driver arrived early and ready to go. We made sure to have enough cash to tip the driver and it was a much smoother process. Which was of course much more convenient. On our return trip, for some reason, we had the option to pay online ahead of time. It took a bit of running around town to try ATMs, trying to call the owner of the company to take the credit card information, and was kind of a hassle. Well, turns out the driver didn’t have the machine that you needed to do that. Online, the website mentions that you can pay the driver with a credit card when you arrive at your destination. Finding out we were vegan, he made sure to point out all the options for us and made sure we were taken care of. And he pointed out the restaurant two doors down that appealed more to tourists, but would cost about 3x the amount. We stopped for a lunch break at a local spot. It made for a quiet ride, but not unpleasant. The driver was friendly, but not overly so. And all we had to do was get our bags in the back and go! The car seat we had requested was already set up. But that wasn’t necessarily a negative factor. We were a bit surprised to find that we had an entire shuttle bus all to ourselves. On the day of our departure, the driver arrived early and was ready to go. There was clear communication following the booking and leading up to our trip. Overall, the online booking process is easy.
